About Us
The Northland Cymbidium Growers’ Association Incorporated (NCGA) was formed in May 2007. The primary purpose of the Association is to assist its members through the exchange of information and ideas on the “best practises” for growing and marketing cymbidium orchids in Northland (New Zealand). The main method for this is expected to be through “field-days” and “thematic workshops” which have been held in the past on an informal basis. In addition it is hoped to use this website as a source of reference material and as a bulletin board for items for sale, particularly plants.
Cymbidium orchids have been grown commercially in Northland for over twenty-five years but recently there has been a considerable influx of new growers as the original owners have reached retirement age and the demand for horticultural business’s has been fuelled by the arrival of experienced farmers, as permanent migrants, from Zimbabwe. This rejuvenation of cymbidium growing in Northland has been matched by a relative decline in some other areas of New Zealand where the demand for land for “urban” and “lifestyle” purposes has reduced the number of cymbidium growers. These trends have been partially responsible for the formation of the NCGA.
The Association hopes to work in unison with other grower groups within New Zealand on matters of mutual interest and as there are no other substantive commercial flower growing associations in Northland it welcomes membership of growers of other floral crops from the Northland area.
